Grant: Do You See What I See?
School: Durham Intermediate School

"Do you see what I see?" Grant was for a simple tool called a jeweler's loupe from a company called "The Private Eye". The kit of 36 loupes can be used for students to look closely at objects. The teacher packet includes several simple questions and activities for the students do and answer as they examine the objects. These questions naturally cause the student to respond using analogies. The loupes can be used in many different disciplines. For example, they encourage student's creative writing to blossom, they help the students to hypothesize and analize structure and function of objects found in nature, they can also improve the ability of student diagrams and artwork to become much more detailed and accurate. The kit also includes an 8 minute video to show teachers and students ways to use the loupes. It also has a "museum" of several natural objects to examine. There are several magnifying cases to put your own samples in for closer examination. An art book of detailed drawings of objects in nature was also included. There is also a hand-held microscope for magnifying to the power of ten. It is a durable microscope that can be passed around the room or taken outside for a closer look at nature. And a CD of interesting science material was a part of this kit. The kit is housed in a durable plastic tub that will be stored in the DIS science lab storage room for any teacher to check out and use.
