Carroll Education Foundation's Grant Recipients and Sponsors 2009

Our grant, “Reading in the 21st Century”, will benefit approximately 80 struggling readers in kindergarten through the fourth grade. Our goal is to spark an increased interest in reading by providing an up-to-date way of reading along to a book with a recorded model. We hope to motivate our readers with the use of a Playaway with a matching text. Each Playaway, similar to an i-pod, contains one to four pre-recorded book titles. The children will have the opportunity to develop their reading fluency and increase comprehension by using these materials at home as a follow up to our classroom lessons. These devices and books will certainly help in motivating and increasing skills as our students develop into life-long readers.
