Carroll Education Foundation's Grant Recipients and Sponsors 2009

Sponsor: Verizon, Dallas City Bank
Grant: Outdoor Pizza Garden
School: Carroll Senior High School

With the funds supplied by CEF (Verison and Dallas City Bank) my environmental science classes will be growing a garden that has all the things needed to make pizza. We will be growing spices, tomatoes, peppers, spinach and a few salad items also. At the end of the year, we will harvest what we can and make pizza for the class to enjoy with a side of salad. This will teach them about the soil, how to manage pests, organic vs inorganic gardening, what is the most efficient way to conserve water in agriculture, how too much fertilizer can effect our water supply, and give them a greater appreciation for the conveniences they have as well as give them a base to start their own gardens if they choose. This will cover about 1/3 to 1/2 of my curriculum and gives the students a purpose for learning. I am very grateful to CEF (Verison and Dallas City Bank) for making this activity possible. It makes learning more fun and meaningful for the students and myself. Thank you for your help!
