Carroll Education Foundation's Grant Recipients and Sponsors 2009

This grant will be implemented across the sixth grade math program at DIS. The main goal of the grant is to take our decimals, percentages, and proportions unit and rewrite it into a thematic unit on food and restaurants. Our students will be able to utilize a wide variety of real-world math skills throughout this unit. Some of our planned activities include: * Nutritional analysis of a wide variety of foods including an analysis of food labels * Tax and tip calculations based on real restaurant menus as well as student-created menus * Food pyramid activities including different foods and food groups * Margin analysis based on typical data from restaurants ranging from fast food to fine dining While math is the main focus, we believe students will also gain perspectives from science, physical education, and general healthy living via this unit. The materials we will purchase will assist us in how restaurants run, how the food pyramid works, and how to integrate all of this into math lessons. We know our students will enjoy our new thematic-based unit!
