It's a Small, Small World: A Multi-Cultural Journey… |
| School: |
Durham Elementary |
Our students today will likely grow to adults that move many times and have a variety of careers. To prepare them for their future, knowledge about other people, countries, customs, and an empathetic attitude will enhance their relationships and foster respect and appreciation of diverse groups. A step towards understanding others is reading appropriately leveled texts about people of other countries. This grant will provide children and teachers with both fiction and nonfiction books to use in the classroom for guided reading lessons. Chosen books will provide an opportunity for students to stand in the shoes of another. Some books are written from the viewpoint of a child from another culture and others are set in another country. Both fiction and nonfiction books will provide the materials necessary to achieve this understanding of various cultures. The goal is to help students see the world through someone else's eyes, learn to understand and appreciate other people's circumstances and perspectives, and to empathize with them.
