Project is designed to motivate students to develop hands-on knowledge and skills in the basics of how the interaction of magnetic and electric fields generate each other. The equipment to be purchased include class sets of ripcord generators, electric motor kits, electric circuit boards, and magnetic optics tables. With this equipment, students will be able to reenact historically significant experiments in electricity and magnetism made by Michael Faraday (Faraday’s Law of Induction), as well as have a first look at James Clerk Maxwell’s mathematical explanations for Michael Faraday’s discoveries. Students will learn how an electric motor relates to an electric generator, and how an electromagnetic force is produced by a change in the strength, position or orientation of an external magnetic field. The ultimate goal of this project is to motivate students to search for creative ways to use renewable ways to convert mechanical energy into electric energy.
