The GREENhouse grant funded the construction of a greenhouse and storage shed between our previously funded research garden and outdoor classroom. It will allow us to continue and extend our studies through the winter months and into spring. Using the greenhouse students will investigate topics such as: synthetic versus organic fertilizers on seed growth, earthworm population density, hydroponic plant growth, seed propagation studies, effects of photo period on plant propagation, process writing, poetry, and descriptive writing. Through these investigations, students will be given the opportunity to apply metric measurement, scientific processes, and the use of scientific instruments in an outside laboratory setting. This project will impact approximately 800 students. Seventh and eighth grade Exploratory Science students will conduct the majority of the investigations, while the district's second graders will be given opportunities to learn about the studies of middle school students through annual field trips. Select Language Arts classes will use the greenhouse for various writing activities allowing for cross-curricular instruction.
