Carroll Education Foundation's Grant Recipients and Sponsors 2007

Sponsor: American Airlines
Grant: Reading with Questions in Mind
School: Old Union Elementary

Since our reading intervention program has evolved from one focused primarily on emerging and early readers to one that also serves transitional readers, we need to expand our book collection to include books on a variety of levels that meet the needs of more advanced readers. We want our students to become independent readers that use good reading strategies to understand and process information gained from reading. For students to gain a good understanding of text, they need to actively interact with what they read. One powerful way of guiding students into greater interaction with books is to teach them to ask questions before, during, and after reading. The leveled books in this grant will be the vehicle we use to empower our students to monitor their reading by asking questions throughout the reading process to gain deeper understanding. These new books will serve approximately eighty students each year in the C.A.R.E. program at Old Union Elementary School.
