Carroll Education Foundation's Grant Recipients and Sponsors 2006

Sponsor: Aventerra/Newland Communities
Grant: Reading in the Real World
Teacher: Donna Edwards, Reading Specialist
School: Rockenbaugh Elementary

Our major goal is for our students to become independent readers with strong comprehension skills. Since most reading in the “real world” is nonfiction and the TAKS test contains many nonfiction passages, we want our students to develop strategies for reading nonfiction text. This CEF grant will provide paired fiction/nonfiction books to help us use our students’ knowledge about reading fiction to lead them into a study of nonfiction. This grant will also provide new nonfiction books to meet the needs of our students’ varied interests and reading levels. The books provided by this grant will serve approximately fifty students each year in kindergarten through third grade at Rockenbaugh Elementary.
